The NHS Dorset Integrated Care Board met on 12 March to review national developments, local system performance and the emerging governance arrangements for the new BSW–Dorset–Somerset cluster. A significant milestone for the voluntary and community sector was confirmed: the new Cluster Board will include a dedicated VCSE Alliance voting member, ensuring community insight and lived experience are embedded at the highest level of decision‑making. Health inequalities and productivity/financial performance remain strategic risks outside tolerance, reinforcing the need for strong cross‑sector collaboration.
The Board received updates on national programmes, including the new National Cancer Plan, rising demand for NHS Talking Therapies, and ongoing expansion of urgent dental care. Dorset now delivers around 39,000 urgent dental appointments each year, with further capacity commissioned for 2025/26. Mental health access continues to grow nationally, with 670,000 people supported last year, including 83,000 receiving employment support. Locally, the system is progressing its Medium Term Plan, though challenges remain around community waiting times and ambulance response standards.
Performance reports highlighted improvements in cancer pathways, outpatient waits and mental health access for children and young people. However, pressures persist in Emergency Department flow, 12‑hour waits, ambulance response times and elective recovery. Committees also reported strong progress in women’s health, oral health, and the FutureCare programme, alongside ongoing fragility in community pharmacy and infection prevention challenges affecting patient flow.
The Board approved the new Cluster Board governance structure, confirming 27 voting members — including the VCSE representative — with arrangements expected to go live from April 2026. Work is also underway to develop a new web‑based community insight bank, drawing on VCSE networks to strengthen neighbourhood intelligence and ensure community voice shapes system priorities.
